The mission of the Portuguese Red Cross is to provide humanitarian and social assistance, especially to the most vulnerable, preventing and alleviating suffering, and defending life, health and human dignity. It is a voluntary institution of public interest that acts in emergency situations and social support.<brPillars and Principles of Action<brThe CVP's work is based on the International Red Cross Movement and follows 7 fundamental principles:<brHumanity: Action focused on suffering.<brImpartiality: No discrimination on the basis of nationality, race, religion or political opinion.<brNeutrality: Do not take sides in conflicts.<brIndependence: Autonomy to act in accordance with the mission.<brVolunteering: Voluntary character, not seeking profit.<brUnit: Only one association per country.<brUniversality: Equality of rights and duties among all national societies.
